Every year in Australia there are over 10,000 house fires, resulting in death, injury, and millions of dollars’ worth of property damage. Even a minor electrical fault can have serious
consequences.
Arc faults can be in Series, Parrallel or to Earth. If the arc current is below the tripping threshold of the upstream MCB or RCD, there is a significant risk of fire. Plus these devices may
not trip at all depending on the type of arc fault. However an AFDD will detect any type of arc current and trip to clear the fault, protecting the installtion.
The most frequent causes of arc faults are:
• Damaged insulation by screws or nails Series
• Trapped cables in doors and windows Arc fault ≥5A L
• Incorrect installation
• Cable breakage
• UV radiation and rodent damage to cables in the outdoor areas Load
• Loose contacts and connections
• Snapped plugs and cables
